Does Bichon need a database?
No. The full-text index, compressed blob storage and metadata store are all embedded, so one container or binary is enough.
Download mail from your IMAP accounts into one searchable email archiver that runs as a single Rust binary or container with no external database.

No. Keep every Bichon directory on a local filesystem such as ext4 or XFS, because network filesystems can corrupt the data. Put the index on an SSD and the blob storage on a bigger HDD if you can.
No. Bichon is an archiver, not an email client. Its optional embedded SMTP server only receives mail.
More apps in Backup.
Sync IMAP and Microsoft 365 mailboxes into an email archive on your own server, then search it or export it as mbox or zipped EML.
Pull Gmail, Microsoft 365 and IMAP mail into an email archiver you host. Everything lands as .eml files that are deduped, compressed and encrypted at rest.
Schedule, browse and restore Restic backups from a web dashboard. Targets include S3, Backblaze B2 and SFTP, plus anything rclone can reach.
Back up to local drives, cloud storage or SFTP with lock-free deduplication.
Back up the databases behind your home apps, such as Postgres, MySQL and MongoDB, from one dashboard to local disks, S3, SFTP or Google Drive.
