Does Grist need a separate database?
No. The container writes documents and metadata into its /persist volume as SQLite files. A Postgres home database and Redis are optional settings for a larger install.
Keep budgets, inventories and project lists in documents where a cell can reference a row from another table and formulas run in Python. Each document is stored as a file in a folder you choose, so it moves or backs up like any other file.

Yes. Formulas are written in Python, and the gvisor sandbox keeps them away from the network and from other documents. Sandboxing needs a processor with the XSAVE flag, which means Sandy Bridge or later on x86.
Yes, the Community edition is Apache-2.0 and free to run. The full edition adds SSO, automations, email notifications and admin controls, and needs an activation key once its 30-day trial ends.

Write docs, track work in databases and sketch on a whiteboard, with workspaces synced through your own server.
Baserow turns Postgres into a no-code database you edit in the browser, with typed fields, filters and forms. Every table gets a REST API.
CryptPad is an encrypted office suite you host yourself. Write a document, sheet or slide deck in the browser and it encrypts the copy on your machine before it reaches the server. Rich text, forms, kanban boards, diagrams and whiteboards use the same encryption. Shared drives, access lists, document history and guest links cover a household or a small group.
Write markdown together in a browser-based editor and watch the edits land as they are typed. HedgeDoc keeps the notes on your server, renders diagrams and slides from the same text, and gives each note a permission level you pick before you share the link.
Turn SQL databases into spreadsheet-style workspaces for household inventories, projects, and other records, hosted on your server.
Merge, edit, convert and lock down PDFs in the browser. You self-host the toolkit, but your files never get uploaded anywhere.
Sketch hand-drawn style diagrams on a virtual whiteboard, served as a static site from your own server.
Run kanban boards on your own server in the Trello style, with workspace members, labels, comments and an activity log on every card. Kan takes an existing Trello board as an import, and the self-hosted stack is the web app, Postgres and a one-off migration container.
